Thirteen items from the Harington family papers. Sir Richard Harington of Ridlington, 12th Baronet, was educated at Eton and Christ College, Cambridge. Called to the Bar in 1886, he practised as a barrister on the Oxford Circuit before taking up an appointment as a Puisne Judge in the High Court of Justice at Fort William in Bengal in 1899, serving in that capacity until returning home in 1913. In later years he acted as Justice of the Peace and Deputy Lieutenant for Herefordshire. The collection is in fair condition, aged and worn.

9pp., 4to. On grey laid paper. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn, on nine leaves held together with a pin. He begins by discussing Harington's 'first motion, viz, "that all persons who are in custody for the purpose of detention merely and not in execution of a penal Sentence for an Offence should be subjected to one uniform discipline"'. Other topics discussed include: 'the proposal "That power be given to the Courts to place any person convicted of felony and not sentenced to Hard labor on rules for 1st.

2pp., 12mo. In good condition, lightly aged. The previous day he saw Sir John Edge, who was 'formerly Ch[ief]. Justice of the North West Province and is now a member of the Indian Council at home'. Chalmers discussed Harington with Edge, who would be glad to see him 'any time at the India Office'. Chalmers encourages Harington to arrange the meeting, as Edge 'is an exceedingly good fellow & was far the best of the Indian C. J's - | He suggested that you should get a testimonial from A. T. Lawrence'.

2pp., 12mo. In fair condition, on lightly-aged paper. A cordial and businesslike missive, reading: 'My dear Harington | Judges at least old ones like myself do not give testimonials to men at the Bar seeking appointments | But you may with pleasure say that you have my permission to refer to me & that may be of use to you; or it may not for the indian Secretary does not know me personally & he may not therefore refer to me at all'.

One page, 16mo (trimmed unevenly), signs of removal from album, minor staining, some text faded, most hard to read (either written in haste or characterusticlally illegible - or both). "You are right in [premising?] that I have many irons in the fire [also &?] that I am not [?] to be [?] [general?] use as to the [Cambridge?] [?] if there are [?] [sales?] I shall be happy to lend a hand, so far as it may be in my power."

Victoria County History, Cambridgeshire, Volume 10, describes how, on the death in 1812 of Admiral Sir Charles Cotton, Landwade Manor 'passed to his son Sir St. Vincent Cotton who came of age in 1822. In 1850 he sold Landwade to Alexander Cotton, probably his younger brother (b. 1804).

Each of the six letters is 1p, 4to. In good condition, on lightly aged and worn paper. With the Society's stamps and annotations. On topics including the printed version of a paper given by Hadfield and the offer to the society of a paper by his friend 'Mr E. P. Reynolds of Bournemouth' (whose father 'Mr E. Reynolds […] was the mainspring of the Engineering side of Messrs Vickers, Sheffield').

On 6 x 9.5 cm piece of paper. In good condition, laid down on slightly-larger piece of paper (part of leaf from an album). Grant's distinctive forward-sloping signature at centre. At top of paper: '<...> Reign, Annoque Domini 1868.' Beneath the signature, in a contemporary hand: 'Sir John Peter Grant Lieut-Governor of Central Provinces of India during Mutiny. [sic] Governor-General of Jamaica born 1807'.

Nine items. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper. Heavily annotated by Duncan. The letters (each 1p. long, two in 4to and two in 8vo) concern her orders and wants'. On 23 April 1945 she writes: 'I find on looking through the Play Pictorial bound volumes that No. 28 His Highness My Husband is missing. It is not a very important one, in fact I don't remember hearing of the play before, but if you happen to have a copy among your single numbers, I should be glad to have it, in order to complete the volume.

1p., landscape 12mo. On aged and worn paper, with strip of discoloration affecting Richardson's signature. The text concerns 'the numbers of the Madras Journal [which] have not yet turned up'. Accompanied by an unattrtibuted newspaper cutting of Richardson's obituary, laid down on a leaf removed from a notebook.

1p., 12mo. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. Docketed in manuscript above text of letter. The typed portion reads: 'Dame Adelaide Anderson presents her compliments and is very glad to receive the card of invitation to the Lecture by Laurence Binyon LL.D. on Persian Painting, to which she looks forward to [sic] on Wednesday, 19th November, at 8.30 p.m.' Autograph addition: 'Her address is now as above (not as hitherton, 21 Allen House, Allen Street, Kensington)'.

14 x 9 cm black and white postcard. In good condition, lightly aged.. A head and shoulders image, with Turner's face looking to the left, looking downwards, hands clasped under her chin. Inscribed at foot: 'To Mr A Watt | Best Wishes | Eva Turner'.

On one side of a 16 x 20 cm leaf torn from an album. In fair condition, lightly aged. The signatures of the eleven Devon players in column along the left-hand edge, and those of the Dorset players in a column along the right-hand edge. Details of the match and players are hard to find. Here is a tentative reading of the Devon signatures: 'F H Canok | A R Strephardy | W F Light | S Blakeney | K G E<?> | E. G. Trench | J R Carter | C R Russell | <?> | G H H Sherlock | E A S<?>'. And a similarly-tentative reading of the Dorset signatures: 'E. C. Walby | W Harrison | W. J. Knight | M. B.

5pp., 12mo. On two bifoliums. With the Society's oval Adelphi date stamp. In fair condition, on lightly-aged paper, with slight rust-staining from paperclip. She begins by asking if 'there would be any difficulty in my examining Barry's paintings at the Adelphi, & taking a few notes on them. | My old friend & my husband's colleague at the British Museum, Mr.

Recording the receipt by Digby of £2 15s 10d, on an annuity. Filled in by the witness, whose signature is illegible.

Begins (with manuscript text in square brackets): 'Annuity for Life, 1746. | Record' [24 Septr. 1765] | Received the [28] Day of [Septr.] 176[5] by me [Wolf Van Hemert Atty to Herman Vander Heere, & Adriaen Verstolk'. Recording a payment of £45 on an annuity. Witness signature of ' Newland'. Van Hemert was born in Amsterdam and is buried in Austin Friars churchyard, London, with a memorial to him inside the church. London.

1p., 8vo. On aged and worn paper, with slight chipping to edges, and some light damp damage. The usual printed document, completed in manuscript. Begins (manuscript text in square brackets): 'Received of the Officers of the Tally-Court, one Tally levied on His Majesties Hereditary Revenue of Excize [...] due unto [St. Thomas Hospitall in Southwark] for one quarter of a Year ended at [Lady Day 1681] [...] granted unto [them] by Assignment from [Sr. Edmond Turnor Knt.] out of the Yearly Rent, or Sum of [-275lb 11s] payable unto the said [Sr. Edmond Turnor] [...]'.

On 12.5 x 17 cm. piece of paper. Aged and worn at one edge, but signature and surrounds clear and strong. Records the receipt, by 'Wm Ld Sundon in behalf of my Wife Ass. of Francis Dyre', from an annuity.

On 36.5 x 19 cm. piece of paper. Elwes' signature is on the reverse, with the following in another hand: '20th Decemr. 1775. | Recd in full'. Beside Elwes' signature are those of the witnesses: 'Robt. Waters' and 'Wm. Nicholls'. Text on recto, with 'Sir Jeffry Elwes Kt.' in right-hand margin, beginning: 'Order is taken this 12 day of Decr. 1775 By Virtue of his Majesty's Genl. Letters of Privy Seal bearing date the 5th.

On 14.5 x 16.5 piece of paper. In fair condition, on lightly aged paper. Laid out on the recto in the customary fashion, with printed text completed in manuscript, and being an order for payment on 13 February 1715 to 'Sr. John Cope Bart.' (i.e. the 5th Baronet), 'in Repayment of Loan on the Sixteenth 4 s. Aid, Anno 1716.' On the reverse is a cropped manuscript text, signed by the 5th Baronet 'Jo: Cope', assigning 'all my Right. Title & Interest. in this Order. Unto Sr John Cope Junr. Kt and to his Assignes', dated 14 May 1717.

1p., on 22 x 17.5 cm. piece of paper. Aged and worn with slight loss and glue staining (not affecting the signature), and laid down on part of leaf cut from an album. The usual printed text, completed in manuscript, beginning (with manuscript text in square brackets): 'ankers Annuities out of 3700l. per Week Excise. | ecord' [2d Apr. 1712 ] | Numb. [1109. 33s: P Ann] | The [10th.] Day of [April] 17[12] | Received then by me [Sr. Robt. Dashwood Assignee of Thomas ffountaine Esqr] [...]'. Signed at foot by Dashwood and the witness 'Tho Bubb' (the latter stained).

1p., on 15 x 17.5cm. Aged and worn, with loss to edges, and laid down on part of a leaf removed from an album. The usual printed text, completed in manuscript, recording a payment of £25. Note: An account of the 1699 Sarah Stout murder trial, at which Cowper 'called expert medical testimony, including the famous physicians Samuel Garth and Hans Sloane, together with the anatomist William Cowper (not related)' is given in his entry in the Oxford DNB.

Records a payment of £56 on an annuity by 'Sr. Denis Dutry assigne per Margent of Sr. John Lethieuller', with a reference to Lethieuller's annuity in the margin. Witnessed at foot by 'John '. Lethieuller has an entry in the Oxford DNB.

1p., 12mo. On aged paper, with particular wear to one corner. Laid out in the usual style, with printed text completed in manuscript. Begins (with manuscript text in square brackets): '[12th. March 1681] | Received of the Officers of the Tally-Court, one Tally levied on His Majesties Hereditary Revenue of Excise, containing the Sum of [three pounds] due unto me for one Quarter of a Year ended at [Michas 1682] [...]'. Signed at the foot: 'Fleetwood Dormer | for Sr. John Busby'. Busby married Mary Dormer, a kinswoman of Fleetwood Dormer of Lee Grange.

1p., 8vo. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper, with contemporary repair by a slip of paper from another leaf from an Exchequer ledger on reverse. Laid out in the usual fashion, with printed text completed in manuscript. Begins (with manuscript text in square brackets): 'Record' [11 April 1716] | The [30] Day of [April] 17[16] | Received by me [Simon ffanshawe now Lord ffanshawe Assigne of Sir Gge Margent] [...]'. Records a payment of £38 12s 6d on an annuity, with marginal calculations involving 'James Morgan', 'Edwd Allen' and 'Edwd Brown'.

Thurston is described as 'Accomptt General to ye Court of Chancery Appointed to <?> for ye Assignee of Fra: Raquet', receiving £10 from an annuity. Signed at foot by the witness, 'E Clarke'.

1p., 8vo. . Aged and with particular wear to extremities. The usual printed text, completed in manuscript, with manuscript calculations in the right-hand margin. Begins (with manuscript text in square brackets): 'Annuities, 14 per Cent. | Record' [12o Oct. 1757] | Numb. | The [24th.] Day of [Oct.] 175[7] | Received by me [Phill: Gybbon, Assignee of John Gibbon & Ralph Snow Esqrs.] | Of the Honourable Thomas Townshend, Esq; One of the Four Tellers of His Majesty's Receipt of Exchequer, the Sum of [fifty six pounds] [...]'.

1p., 8vo. On aged and worn paper, with loss to one corner. Verney's signature is large and bold, with a few light ink stains over the last letter. The document is laid out in the usual way, with printed text completed in manuscript. It begins (with manuscript text in square brackets): 'The [3d] Day of [August] 175[6] | Received by me [Ralph Earl of Verney the Attorney to Sr Thos. Cave Bart Assignee as P Margin]'. Recording a payment of £147, on an annuity.

1p., on 24 x 16cm. piece of paper. The first part of the document reads: 'Recorded 24 Decembr 1701 | Received of the Lord ffitcharding three hundred pounds part of an Order of ten thousand two hundred pounds out of the 4½ P Cents for Secrett Service'. Below this, in the right-hand margin, Ferne has written: 'Three Hundred Pounds | Hen: Ferne | ple of 10200 | Pr Secret Service | 22 Decr. 1701'. At the foot of the page, in another hand: 'Witness. | Rd: Porter'.
