Pamphlet, 58pp. 8vo, original printed wraps, with crude reinforcement of spine. wraps chipped, and partially stained, minor staining and foxing in contents. Front wrap inscribed "J. Bartlett, M.D." John Bartlett of "Quotations" fame married into the Willard clan but, although the signature resembles his, I've found no evidence for the M.D. THe volume concerns a Civil War soldier who perished in the Fredericksburg campaign.

Walley has converted one volume of a printed diary ('The Business Year Book' for 1923, by the R. C. Maxwell Co., Trenton, New Jersey) into a continuous table listing all the articles contributed between 27 November 1925 and 17 January 1934. Entries are compiled with the meticulous attention to detail one would expect from an engineer, giving a range of information including the times of receipt of material to the minute, and even the typeface in which an article was printed.

A tastefully printed collection, with Browne stating in his twenty-two page introduction that 'this supplementary volume of the works of Fielding' includes among its contents of forty pieces of writing the first printing of 'A true State of the Case of Bosavern Penlez' (wrongly spelt 'Boscavern Penlez' in the contents), which is 39pp. in length (pp.44-82).

Both items in good condition, with light signs of age and wear. Both side stitched, and without wraps. ONE: 'Recommendations respecting the Extension of the University of Oxford'. 32pp., 8vo. On reverse of title: 'The following Paper was drawn up at the request of the Tutors' Association by a Committee appointed on Nov. 19, 1852. It was read and considered at meetings of the Association held in Merton and Jesus College Common Rooms on Dec. 10 and 13: and its adoption will be proposed at the first meeting of the Association next Term.' TWO: 'Reports of the Oxford Tutors' Association. No. II.

Printed on both sides of a 15 x 135 cm strip of paper, concertina-folded to make 30pp., with each page on a 15 x 9 cm panel. A scarce survival, on aged and worn paper. No illustrations, but detailed entries in small print. One side carries 10pp of 'Cavalry and Artillery Recruits' Physical Training Tables', 4pp of 'Trained Solders' Physical Exercise Tables' and the title.

The item derives from the papers of Sir Richard Harington, 12th Baronet of Ridlington (1861-1931), who volunteered for the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve on the outbreak of the First World War, and was promoted to the rank of Chief Petty Officer in the Anti-Aircraft Corps, serving in that capacity until 1916. 2pp., foolscap folio. On both sides of a leaf of paper with embossed Government crest. In fair condition, lightly-aged and worn, with a few short closed tears to edges. Mimeographed duplication of a manuscript poem parodying Thomas Moore's poem 'The Minstrel Boy'.

ONE: Typed Letter Signed from 'Roger Vansittart' to 'Sir Richard Harington, Bart., | Whitbourne Court, | Worcester.' Foreign Office; 13 April 1927. 1p., foolscap 8vo. In fair condition aged and worn. He is 'directed by Secretary Sir Austen Chamberlain to refer to your letter of the 5th instant regarding the possibility of a claim being preferred against the Mexican Government in respect of your holding in Mexican Railways'.

The two items on aged and worn paper. ONE: Printed circular letter, printed in blue on firm's letterhead, with royal warrant in red at head. 1p., 4to. After boasting of the firm's prices compared with those of other firms, the letter boasts: 'We are the only firm in the world engaged in making bottled Cider and Perry on a large scale by the same processes in all respects as are employed in the production of the Sparkling Wines of Rheims and Epernay.

Bound in at the end is a twelve-page catalogue, dated 1 October 1816, and with drophead title: 'Valuable Periodical Works, Published by Sherwood, Neely, and Jones, Paternoster Row, London. Beneath the drophead title is a woodcut of a lion. Only one copy of the trade catalogue traced on OCLC WorldCat.

1p., 12mo. In fair condition, on lightly aged and worn paper. Perforated at right edge, and headed 'This half should be retained by Parent or Guardian.' (The absent 'fly leaf' was to be 'returned to the Commanding Officer not later than the 6th April, with the answers filled in, giving the fullest information.') The first part of the memorandum is mainly concerned with railway arrangements for those travelling to Scotland, Ireland, London, Bristol, Plymouth, Exeter.

Consisting, after a short introduction, of an area-by-area report of the effects of the flood, beginning with 'Midnight in the Dolemeads. | Distressing Scenes.', 'Corn Street, Milk Street and Avon Street' and 'Southgate Street', and ending with 'Batheaston', 'Radstock' and 'Midsomer Norton'. Perren's photographs show 'Dolemeads and Association Cricket Fields', 'The Old Bridge', 'Southgate Street' and 'The Quay from the Old Bridge'.

14pp., 12mo. Stapled pamphlet. In good condition, lightly aged and with a little rust spotting. At head of title, in unobtrusive contemporary hand: '29 Read 8 March 1904'. The author is not named, but is Gillett, who had authored the first of his pamphlets under the name 'W. G.' Introduction, dated 16 December 1903, states that the author's two previous pamphlets were 'well received, over two hundred and fifty thousand copies of the latter having been printed.

On reverse of title: 'This booklet is produced in accordance with Paper Control regulations and is therefore limited in size and scope | It is publication number one of the Imprint Society and was first issued in August 1944'. The pamphlet begins: 'The idea that led to the Imprint Society being formed was conceived when two compositors, working in Johannesburg in 1939, realized that most of the printed matter produced in South Africa was ugly and uninspired, and that nothing was being done to remedy this.

16pp., 16mo. Stapled. One minor manuscript correction. Aged and worn, in lightly-stained card covers carrying six Bewick woodcuts in black, with text lengthwise and upwards in red. The insides of the covers are red in colour, and on the front inside cover is written 'love from | Sim & Arnold'. Whether the hand is Rattenbury's or his wife's is not clear. Fourteen poems, from 'Considering K 279 to K 284' to 'Koechel's Adoration'.

A two-page 'Prefatory Note' has a long quotation from one of Meynell's catalogues, beginning: 'My books must at my death be turned to account.

Printed on both sides of a 21.5 x 28.5 cm piece of thick paper, folded into a 21.5 x 9.5 cm packet, with three panels on the outside and a single page of text within. A nice piece of Savoy Theatre ephemera. Text in purple, with gilt borders, except on the front cover, and with 'The Ancient Arms of the Savoy' in gilt, black, green and orange. In fair condition, lightly aged and ruckled. Two panels of advertisements on the outside, with the programme on the inside also flanked by advertisements.

The full title reads: 'London Cries: With Six Charming Children printed direct from stippled plates in the Bartolozzi style, and duplicated in red and brown, and about forty other illustrations including ten of Rowlandson's humorous subjects in facsimile, and tinted; examples by George Cruikshank, Joseph Crawhall, &c., &c. The text by Andrew W. Tuer, Author of "Bartolozzi and his Works," *&c.' [1] + 48pp., 4to. With six engraved plates of children and forty illustrations in text, those from Rowlandson hand-coloured. Constant Lambert referred to 'In the Shadows' as 'that rightly renowned piece'.For the playing of the song as the Titanic sank, see Ian Whitcomb, 'The Titanic Songbook' (2011) and Steve Turner, 'The Band Played On' (2011). The three items of sheet music are from Finck's papers, and their condition bears testimony to their having been working copies. ONE: 'In the Shadows'. 8pp., 12mo. Tastefully printed in the firm's robust style. The blurb on the front of the dustwrapper states: 'The aim of the author, himself an Old Carthusian, is to introduce or recall some of the famous men who have successively peopled the Charterhouse, whether as monastery, mansion or school.

The title-page states that the cases are heard 'Before John William Willis Bund, Esq., Chairman, and Richard Holmden Amphlett, Esq., Vice-Chairman.' The calendar consists of a table of fifteen prisioners, over four double-pages, with entries divided into fifteen columns, giving name of prisoner, age, trade, 'Degree of Instruction', details of committing magistrate, date of warrant, date of receipt into custody, details of 'Offence as charged in the Commitment'.

The 57-mile canal section of the two rivers was constructed between 1794 and 1810. In the face of competition by the Great Western Railway it fell into disuse in the latter nineteenth century. A process of restoration began a hundred years later, and the canal is now a popular amenity. Both items in good condition, lightly aged and worn. Both headed on first page 'Report of the Committee of Management, of the Kennet and Avon Canal Navigation.' Both are 3pp., 8vo, on bifoliums.
