1p., 4to. Sixteen lines of closely-written text. The letter begins: 'On my return yesterday from a lecture tour in America I happened to hear of the series on Mahatma Gandhi that you have compiled, with Maurice Brown, for the Third Programme.' He complains that, although Watson had previously had his assurance that he was willing to participate in such it programme, it is 'rather hurtful to find that you have evidently decided to cut me out of the programme.

3pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged and worn. Addressed to 'Dear Sir & Brother'. He had been hoping to see him 'at the consecration of our Tenbury Lodge. I begged Brother Barber to invite you, & I think I told you we would put you up here on that occasion'. He hopes he will come 'at some future lodge night when we have got into work'. He informs him that he has that day 'received a notice of the Royal Arch Chapter' the following Thursday, adding 'I see I am to be ballotted for, & if elected to be exalted'.

Evans's book on 'The Shaft Graves and Bee-hive Tombs of Mycenae' had been published by Macmillans in 1929, and Evans writes that the present item 'has been prepared in view of the considered opinion concerning the author's important discovery expressed by Professor Friedrich von Duhn, the distinguished German archaeologist, a little before his death'. This opinion of Duhn ('the "Grand Old Man" of German Archaeology') was 'addressed to the Author a little before his death'.

4pp., 8vo. Bifolium. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper. Replying to the recipient's 'very natural & proper inquiries', he discusses the granting of the 'honorary Degree of M.A.', which is 'often granted by our best colleges, to professors & men, known to those who nominate, on evidence of attainments equivalent to what is demanded for the same degree in course [...] No respectable College could confer the M.A. - in view of mere theological qualifications'. He discusses the length of time spent studying theology at Kenyon College, adding 'In absence - I think you wod.

Church was a leading authority on the chemistry of paintings. 4pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In very good condition. Written in a neat and close hand in the spirit of a true antiquary. Addressed to 'My dear Friend'. He begins by discussing Roman coins ('by no means rare even when in good condition'), describing 'two gold Neros' in his possession, and 'aurei of Galba', before turning to his activitiies since leaving Cirencester. He has not been 'working at Britanno-Roman things', but has been through 'some very interesting specimens belonging to Mr. T. B.

2pp., 12mo. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn. The menu is written out in faint pencil on one side, beneath the letterhead. On the other side, and headed with the date 4 June 1919 is the following playful address: 'Dear Jerrold, | "Carry on"! | This has no reference to the food we have just eaten. | You Walter [pun on 'ought to'] be here because you're a Jerrold [pun on 'dear old'] fellow. | And so say all of us.' Beneath this are nine signatures, two of which are undeciphered.

103pp., 4to. Title-page and cast of characters followed by first act (paginated to 43), second act (paginated to B26) and third act (paginated to C32). In plain brown paper wraps with signature of 'Arthur Cox' in pencil on cover. Stained and worn. A handful of notes to third act in pencil and ink. The volume contains a copy of a duplicated typed form titled 'Prospect Account Particulars', in an envelope addressed in manuscript to 'Signor <?> | Valdano | Italy.' According to COPAC May's translation of the play was published by Penguin Books in 1962 and 1969.

2pp., 4to. Carbon. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn. Begins: 'The third of a series of lectures arranged by the Norwich Printers' Joint Industrial Council was held at the Norwich Central Public Library on March 19, when the City Librarian (Mr. Geo A. Stephen, the author of "Commercial Bookbinding" and other works) gave a lecture on "The Making of a Modern Book". The lecture was illustrated by about a hundred lantern slides and exhibits. [...] Mr. F.S.

13pp., 8vo, paginated 219-231. Stapled, in yellow printed wraps. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper, with rusted staples. Publishing 'the text and translation of what is one of the most interesting of the little treatises preserved in the Istanbul manuscript, both because of its contents, and also for the reason that it is the only work of Junayd for which we have a second authority'. No copies of this offprint traced, either on OCLC WorldCat or on COPAC.

2pp., 12mo. 25 lines of text. In fair conditon, on aged and worn paper. Her sister Frances is 'overjoyed at your benevolent efforts for me', and 'Mr Arthur Hall is very glad indeed to hear what you are trying to do, and is quite ready if you and I approve to send a set of my books, with a notification to Mr Gladstone, and also of privately interesting the Archbishop, who will, he has no doubt send an autograph letter privately to the Prirme Minister'. The letter ends with a prayer for her 'kind friends', concluding 'The Lord will provide'.

On one side of a small skin (c.35 x 43 cm). In fair condition: somewhat worn and aged. Laid out in the usual fashion, with embossed tax stamp in margin. Signed on gutter 'Meath' and 'Arth; Thomas', with the signatories two seals in red wax (both cracked and with some loss). In English. Signatures of the two witnesses on reverse: 'Nichs. Thompson' and 'Joh Morrisson'. Scan on application.

3pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition, on aged and unevenly-sunned paper. He begins by giving six numbered points which 'will do for the Introduction' to a prospectus for a magazine. The first reads: 'The biographical & archaeological portion of the Magazine will be placed under the superintendance of the Revd Professor Christmas, M.A.

22pp., 8vo. Stitched and in brown printed wraps. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn, in chipped and damaged wraps with shelfmark. Unopened. In manuscript at head of front wrap: 'de la part des auteurs'. Scarce: no copy in the Bibliothèque Nationale, and only three copies on OCLC WorldCat.

At the time of his death de la Rive's work was deemed by one obituarist ' indispensable for the scientific student of electricity', and the phrase was repeated in the eleventh edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica. Scarce: no copy in the Bibliothèque Nationale, and of the seven copies on OCLC WorldCat, five in Swiss libraries.

2pp., 12mo. 37 lines of text. Bifolium. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper. The first sentence reads: 'Gegen das Projekt einer elektrischen Strassenbahn mit Erdleitung habe ich Einspruch erhoben und das Projekt ist von dem Polizei-Praesidium und von dem Ministerium fur offentliche Arbeiten untersagt worden.' The last paragraph refers to 'die Reichs-Telegraphic', 'Telephon', and 'Linien mit Erdleitung in Berlin', and contains a bar of music.

2pp., 8vo. Bifolium. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. Cole has received a request from Jephson, asking him 'to send the Poll-book of the County Fermanagh to the Library of the Carleton [sic] Club'. He explains that 'for the last two Elections for that County there has been no Contest.

All three items in good condition, with light signs of age, and minor traces of previous mounting. The two letters are both 2pp., 12mo, on bifoliums. ONE: Letter to Rücker of 12 May 1898. He explains that if he is 'not at the Society ready to give the <5 minutes?> Paper at 4.30' it is because he is 'engaged in getting new results [...] In any case I will appear if all goes well.' TWO: Letter to Lady Rücker of 30 May 1907. His wife has had an attack of bronchitis and 'is in the hands of Nurses and Doctor.

3pp., 12mo. On bifolium with mourning border. 'I wrote to you that Sir T. Acland had written to me about the Pitcairn Islanders: and yours about Mr. Nobbs [George Hunn Nobbs (1799-1884)] has crossed mine on the way. | In the meantime, Arthur Mills, who is Sir T. A's Son-in-law, has called upon me here: & I find he in your & therefore I do not expect any further trouble on the subject.'

Bound in green buckram, with 'TASTE | OSBERT SITWELL | AND | MARGARET BARTON' stamped in gilt on front board. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper, in lightly-worn binding.

In good condition, on aged card. Addressed to 'Erich Alport Esqe. | 195 Woodstock Rd. | Oxford'. The card reads: 'By dint of putting them up to their necks in water every night, all the peonies came out & are only just scattering their petals. I have been flower viewing all the week - two magnificent gardens & the Chelsea show. It was very nice to see you. I hope you will propose yourself again - after I get back from abroad.'

The thirteen items are in good condition, on lightly-aged paper. All but one bear the purple oval stamp of the Royal Society of Arts, and most are docketted. Totalling 10pp., 4to; 3pp., 12mo. The earlier letters are addressed to Wood and the later ones to Menzies. The first letter (14 August 1915), in which Pite proposes becoming a member of the Society, is the only one not to concern the course of lectures.

The two items in fair condition, on aged and worn paper. ONE: To 'C. Lavers Smith, Esq'. 21 April 1903. 2pp., landscape 8vo. He asks 'whether prints are to be had of Nell Gwynne's reputed birthplace at Hereford'. He made enquiries about the house in Hereford on the previous Saturday. 'It was pulled down in 1861; but in 1858 two photographs of it were taken, and I found an old photographer who had negatives which he promised to lend to me for a small consideration.

vii + 96pp., 8vo. In grey cloth binding, with title printed on cover and spine. Internally good, on lightly-aged paper (with minor discoloration in three openings from pressed flowers), in worn and discoloured binding. Title-leaf printed in red and black (including publisher's device on title-page). On reverse of title: 'Seven copies of this edition on Japanese vellum and 500 on handmade only for sale printed by hand at the Astolat Press Guildford and there published November nineteen hundred & one.' Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: 'E. M. H. | from A. R. G. | 14 Dec.

The three items are in good condition, on lightly-aged paper. One is slightly creased, and the other two carry minor traces of rust from a paperclip. All three are accompanied by their envelopes, each bearing a circular royal stamp in purple, and a 'LONDON SW1 OFFICIAL PAID' postmark in red. ONE: 28 May 1954. 1p., 12mo. 'I am commanded by Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother to thank you for your letter, and for the leaflet announcing a reproduction of the "Album of Redouté".
