In his introduction Taylor explains: 'The accompanying Report has been prepared under the auspices of the Office of the Governor's Legal Counsel in response to your questions: first, as to whether there are substantial grounds for believing - at least in light of the criminal justice standards of today - that Sacco and Vanzetti were unfairly convicted and executed, and, second, if so, what action can now appropriately be taken.

Robinson is the author of Ollier's entry in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, in which he discusses the 'fifty titles' that Ollier and his brother James published between 1817 and 1823, and the others dating from his second stint as publisher between 1846 and 1849. The list is 10pp., 4to. In fair condition, on lightly-aged paper. Subtitle: '(*Indicates that U. of Delaware Library has in original, microform, or photo rpt.)' Robinson has given the date and his details in autograph at the head, and has starred items in 'urgently need' in red ink.

A jingoistic wartime outfit, with the letterhead proclaiming 'THE BRITISH EMPIRE FOR BRITISH SUBJECTS' and 'NO GERMAN INFLUENCE. | NO GERMAN LABOUR. | NO GERMAN GOODS | That compete with British.' The organisations chairman is named as Lord Leith of Fyvie, and the chairman Lieut-Col. Sir Mervyn Manningham-Buller. The long text begins: 'The British Empire Union offers a Prize of £2 2s.

16pp., 12mo. Stabbed and unbound. In fair condition, on lightly-aged paper. The books, from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, are such as would adorn the shelves of a gentleman's country mansion. BBTI only has Bellchambers active in 1846, and there is a hint of desperation about the pricing, with the published price often given along with Bellchambers', and Ritson's 'Ancient Poetry' being offered at 'a very reduced price'. Scarce: no copies traced either on OCLC WorldCat or on COPAC.

24pp., 8vo. Pagination includes the wraps, which carry the last two pages. With frontispiece plate: 'Oscar Wilde | Unpublished Caricature | By Finch Mason | [item 31]'. In fair condition, on lightly-aged paper, in worn and chipped wraps. Wilde's name has been underlined in red pencil on cover.

16pp., 12mo. Stabbed and unbound. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. Dated in pencil in a modern hand at head of first page. Eighteenth and nineteenth century items in alphabetical order between A and G (but complete, nineteenth-century booksellers' catalogues often being issued as parts of series), The entry for the new edition of Dugdale's 'Monasticon Anglicanum', offered at £31 10s 0d, takes up more than half a page of small print. The main descriptions are for 'Knight's Shilling Weekly Volume' (covering the first four pages), and 'The New Orbis Pictus' (covering three pages), the latter described as '12,000 Engravings on Wood, 72 on Steel, 40 Illuminations, and 13 Coloured Maps.'

A bulky 8vo volume, unpaginated. In fair condition, on aged paper, with damp staining to the last few leaves. In worn contemporary brown-leather binding, with spine in six compartments, and red label with title in gilt. Six copies of this edition on COPAC.

iii + 66pp., 4to. Duplicated typescript in printed card covers, with green tape spine. Internally in fair condition, slightly dogeared, in worn covers. Stamps of the London Borough of Southwark Reference Library. As Emery explains in the preface, the first bibliography of Bennett's works, produced to coincide with the centenary of his birth. Divided into 25 sections including 'Film Scenarios', 'Operas', 'Poems' and 'Bookseller's Catalogues', and ending with its own bibliography. An uncommon item.

[3] + viii + 112 + 51pp., 4to. Internally fair, on lightly-aged paper, in binding with heavily-damaged leather spine and worn green cloth covers. The author states that the volume is the second edition in his preface, 'the First having been published by the late Arthur Gyles, in 1886'. The object 'is primarily to supply a work of convenient size for the use of Second-hand Booksellers, which may facilitate intercourse with their confreres in our own and other countries'. Three pages of advertisements at front, and a further fifty-one at rear.

11pp., 4to, paginated 3-13. On six leaves extracted from the magazine, stapled together at head. In fair condition, aged and a little worn. Inscribed at head of first page: 'Best as always. Hope to see you soon | Louis.' From the papers of the American critic Harry Levin (1912-1994).

Three-page preface by the editor, beginning with the self-contradictory assertion that 'it has been decided to publish [sic] the following collection of pieces for private circulation'. A parody of Scott's 'Bonny Dundee', pp.7-9, is said to have been first published (in Punch in 1862) at 'The time of the Anarchist scare', and is accompanied by a long note regarding 'the epidemic of garotting from which London suffered in 1862'. No other copy recorded!

8pp., 8vo. Unstitched (stabbed). Unopened, so that the four leaves unfold into a single strip with four pages on each side. In good condition, lightly aged and worn. First page headed 'BOOKS Printed for J. DEBRETT.' Numerous works are described in no particular order, in small print, beginning with 'PARLIAMENTARY REGISTER, 1794. | This day is published, | NUMBER XII. of the DEBATES of the PRESENT SESSION, [...]'. For more information on Debrett, see his entry in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. BBTI states that he was active before 1781, and went bankrupt in 1804.

The volume is still genuinely useful, containing a mass of information in the annotations to each entry, from Mrs Abdy's 'Poetry' in six volumes to William Young's 'A Journal of a Summer Excursion'.

The handbill is 4pp., 8vo. on a bifolium. In good condition, on aged paper. The upper half of the first page carries the advertisement for 'Count Tolstoi's Works', headed 'Vol. I ready October 25th.' With coloured illustration of the book's design, captioned 'Reduced fac-simile of binding'. Regarding what is the earliest edition of Tolstoy's collected works in English (predating those of Wiener and Garnett by more than ten years), the publisher writes: 'Mr.

National Book League Library bookplate on reverse of title-leaf, and traces of the NBLL bookplate. A careful catalogue of the second portion of the sale of Thompson's sumptuous collection of manuscripts (the first portion having been sold by Sotheby's on 3 June 1920), with a two-page introductory note ('Preliminary') by him. The collection had previously been catalogued in four volumes by M. R. James and others.

4pp., folio. Bifolium. Text clear and complete on aged and spotted paper. Addressed 'To the Grand Committee, | St. Thomas's Hospital.' An interesting document, in small print, describing in great detail Currey's principles behind the design of the design of the hospital, from 'Water Closets, Lavatories, and Bath Rooms' to 'Administration Block'.

40pp., 8vo, printed paper wraps, damaged with small loss, contents good. FFull title appesars to be (front cover): "Free trade. Preferential tariffs. Canadian fiscal policy. Imperial trade and foreign trade. Sugar bounties & sugar taxes. Foreign prison-made goods. Merchandise marks. Trade questions & the diplomatic service : the annual meeting of the Cobden Club, 1897 with the Committee's report". Copies in seven libraries, home and abroad, but no copy in BL (COPAC and WorldCat).

In good condition, lightly-aged, no wraps, disbound. Two addresses written in pencil on reverse of last leaf, and a name in ink.

Long list in small print, dating from between 1898 and 1911, and with entries listed under five columns: 'Name of Student', 'College', 'Year of leaving College', 'Degree' and 'Present School'. The four items date from around the same period, all printed in black and white on shiny art paper, stapled in cream card wraps with simple and elegant titles printed in gold on the front covers. All four are profusely illustrated, with accompanying effusive text. Two have price lists printed in red tipped-in at the end. All four are in fair condition, with pages of text in a good state, and light signs of age and wear to the covers, the two larger items exhibiting slight rolled creasing, and one of them with wear at foot of spine.

16pp., 12mo. Stapled pamphlet. In fair condition, aged and dogeared. Cover reads 'FESTIVAL OF BRITAIN | MAY 3 - SEPTEMBER 30, 1951 | INFORMATION SUMMARY'. The lettering of the words 'FESTIVAL OF BRITAIN' is in the distinctive style, and the festival's logo is on the back cover. A list of contents on the second page includes an introduction on 'The Festival Organisation', information on events around Britain, 'Travelling Exhibitions' (including the 'Festival Ship Campania'), 'The Churches' Participation', and sections on books, films and 'Admission Charges'.

17pp., 8vo. Unbound. In fair condition, on aged paper with slight rusting to staple. Addressed 'To the Council of the Library Association of the United Kingdom'. The author explains that for the purposes of his report 'the definition of library appliances is mechanical contrivances designed to carry on or facilitate the work of a library, but excluding such as are connected with structural arrangements'. The only copy on either OCLC WorldCat or COPAC at the British Library and University of Bristol.

16pp., landscape 8vo. Stapled in cream printed wraps, printed in black red, grey, yellow and blue, with caricature by Guillaume on cover showing a lady performer on a chair with a glove puppet of a gentleman. Worn and aged, with rusted staples, and wrappers detached. The sixteen pages of the catalogue are printed in light-blue and yellow on shiny art paper, and consist entirely of captioned photographs of waxworks, with no accompanying text.
