Stapled pamphlet. 20pp, 12mo. In good condition, lightly aged and worn. Sargent’s unusual bold stylized signature, in blue pencil, almost occupies a 5 cm square. All but the top centimeter which touches the printed date at points, is written on blank space on the cover. See image.

A jingoistic wartime outfit, with the letterhead proclaiming 'THE BRITISH EMPIRE FOR BRITISH SUBJECTS' and 'NO GERMAN INFLUENCE. | NO GERMAN LABOUR. | NO GERMAN GOODS | That compete with British.' The organisations chairman is named as Lord Leith of Fyvie, and the chairman Lieut-Col. Sir Mervyn Manningham-Buller. The long text begins: 'The British Empire Union offers a Prize of £2 2s.

Autograph Letter Signed ('Henry J. Wood') from the conductor Sir Henry Wood to 'Mr. Williams', asking him to 'borrow from Mr. Pheasant tonight the 3rd Trumpet part of Rimsky-Korsakoff Ballet Music "Mlada"'.

Wood writes: 'Dear Mr. Williams | Will you kindly borrow from Mr. Pheasant tonight the 3rd Trumpet part of Rimsky-Korsakoff Ballet Music "Mlada" as there is a Tromba Alta part which according to the Score & as far as I can judge you can play, please take it home and let me know the result of your studies | Faithfully | Henry J. Wood'. In pencil at the foot of the second page, presumably by Williams, are a couple of bars of musical notation.

On a leaf (roughly 21.5 x 14) removed from a programme. Grubby, worn and with a central vertical fold. Laid down on a leaf (22 x 18 cm, and ruckled and spotted) removed from an autograph album. The autographed page only carries Wood's photographic portrait (12.5 x 8 cm), captioned 'Sir Henry J. Wood'). Bold signature in bottom right-hand corner of photograph: 'Sincerely yours | Henry J. Wood'.
