SUFFRAGETTE

An attractive artefact of a pioneer of women’s rights. See her entry in the Oxford DNB. On 14 x 9 cm post card. In good condition, lightly aged. Addressed by Faithfull, with two stamps and postmarks, to ‘Miss Muriel Lewis / Greyhound Hotel / Carshalton / Surrey’. In neat hand and with good firm signature: ‘1 Campden Grove Kensington / I hope to see you to lunch to-morrow Monday at 1. pm. / Yrs. / L. M. Faithfull’.

See her entry in the Oxford DNB. Clearly written in response to a request for an autograph. On 11.5 x 5.5 piece of wove paper, cut from an album. In good condition. Reads: ‘Yours very truly / Ada Ellen Bayly / “Edna Lyall.” ’.

Two pages, 12mo, corner chipped with loss, evidence of its being tipped onto something, not affecting the text, mainly good condition. Text: Many thanks for letting me know of the forthcoming concert. Being here I should probably not otherwise have heard of it. I do hope your lovely music will be properly appreciated and the concert altogether a great success.. I cannot - alas! attend it myself. I am here on the Sick List more or less, and not yet [...?] to anything much in the way of exertion[...]

3pp, 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition, on aged paper with traces of glue from mount on reverse of second leaf. The letter begins: 'Dear Miss Cole - | It is kind of you to invite Mr Raj - I have forwarded yr message to him, & told him to answer it himself. He is a very good young man studying just now for his degree in London University - a friend of [Kesemb Amrinder Senj?] & a member of the [Brahur Somcij?] (Church of the One God - of India)'. She knows nothing else about him, but 'the [Brahures?] all come to him by right'.

Three postcards, good condition with postal marks. Text: "I must thank you with all my heart of the splendid review in The New Statesman including the delightful little allusion to my Selected Passages [ Selected passages from the works of Bernard Shaw ; Chosen by Charlotte F. Shaw. ... Published: London : Constable, 1912]. It was more than satisfactory that you should specially have picked out the dissection of [Ibsen's] 'When we dead awaken - as that is my [underlined] particular hobb7y! It is a good play - but you have to get it in focus. It was 8 years before I could get GBS to do that!

The wife of a Liberal MP and author of children's books, Lady Beatrice Rochdale 'spoke, helped at suffrage stalls, etc.; took part in processions' (see J. Vellacott, 'From Liberal to Labour with Women's Suffrage', 1993). 2pp., 12mo. In good condition, lightly aged. She notes that Armstrong has 'kindly promised to speak at a meeting here on the 6th. of March for the Suffrage Cause', and invites him to 'a meal here either before or after meeting'. She wonders whether it might 'be a help if I sent you back in the Motor'. The letter ends: 'I am afraid we shall not have a very large meeting'.

2pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged. The male recipient is not named. The year has been added in another hand at the head of the first page. She will be 'pleased to speak at your proposed meeting if possible'. She a question regarding the timing of the meeting, which would have to be in 'the week beginning Jan. 29 to suit me'. She gives a number of dates and times when she has 'engagements in London', concluding: 'If you can fix the meeting so as to make it possible for me to keep these engagements I will come'.

Two pages, 8vo, fold marks, some wear on a fold mark, grubby, bottom edge chipped, all text legible. Bottom of verso, copies obtainable from the author of from "The Hon. Sec. of the Society for the Protection of Birds, Mrs. F.E. Lemon [...]" No copy on COPAC etc.

Lambie is the subject of a long obituary in The Scotsman, 21 January 2015. Both items 2pp., 4to. Both in good condition, with light signs of age and wear. ONE: 21 September 1973. She has 'heard good accounts' of the Gladstone Court Museum, and a friend 'now promises me to motor me there some time soon. At 81, I am no longer able to go “under my own steam”'. She agrees to let him use her poem 'Background' in a Christmas card, but would like to see the design before printing.

Written over the front of a 6 x 9.5 cm calling card of 'Mrs. Ormiston Chant, | 49, Gower Street, W.C.' In good condition, lightly aged. Eve has written his initials in red ink over the note. Reads: 'Dear Mr Eve | Please excuse Clement for being late this morning. We are starting for Grindewald, and are anxious for him to see us off at Charing Cross. He will be at school by 11 a.m. | Yours sincerely. | L. Ormiston Chant.' For information on Eve, see P. G. Naiditfh, 'A.E. Housman at University College, London: The Election of 1892' (1988).

The present item - Daisy Harriman's Visitors' Book - is a significant artefact. Harriman was an important social activist and one of New York's leading socialites (at age 86, as Life Magazine reported, she still continued to host regular Sunday dinners for around twenty guests).

2pp., 8vo. Handbill with drophead title. In fair condition, lightly-aged, unbound, with slight loss to one corner (not affecting text). Inscribed at head of first page: 'Lord Houghton | de la part d'Arlès-Dufour'. Lord Houghton is better known as Richard Monckton Milnes (1809-1885); Jean Barthelemy Arlès Dufour (Barthelemy Francois Arlès Dufour) (1797-1872) was a leading Lyons silk manufacturer.

21pp., 8vo. On title-page: 'This Lecture, the substance of which forms part of an unpublished work, is reprinted for the Married Women's Property Committee, with the permission of the author.' In good condition, lightly-aged, no wraps, disbound. Two addresses written in pencil on reverse of last leaf, and a name in ink.

On 4.5 x 11 cm. slip of paper, cut from the end of a letter. In fair condition, lightly aged and ruckled. Good firm signature. Reads: 'Ever yours lovingly | E G Anderson'. At bottom right in another hand: '1874'. Fragment of letter on reverse: '[...] much better for his holyday [sic] & he sees Louie immensely improved. We are urging Alice to stand [...]'. The 'Alice' of the letter is her sister Alice (b.1842), and the 'Louie' her daughter Louisa (1873-1943), who would also become a doctor.

2pp., 16mo. The last leaf of a letter. In fair condition, lightly aged. Begins with reference to the payment of a subscription to 'the Society'. Continues: 'You must indeed have enjoyed your tour in the Black Forest. We are hoping to go to the South of France next month for a few weeks as we have not ben a journey all this year. I hope you and Mrs. Hunt will give us the pleasure of seeing you here if ever you come to Bath. My sister joins me in kindest regards'.

Wolstenholme's letter, dated '63, FINBOROUGH ROAD, S.W., | February 15th, 1873.', on the recto of the first leaf; and the 'DIRECTIONS' on the recto of the second. The letter begins: 'The "Married Women's Property Act (1870) Amendment Bill" No. I, introduced by Mr. Hinde Palmer, stands as the first order of the day for Wednesday next, the 19th inst., and will, if it passes the second reading on that day, be put down for committee on Friday, the 21st inst.'
