As it is, he asks him to choose for himself, 'with the aid of your wife': 'Are you and she sick of the Oxford Books of Verse? Is Shakspeare's England too weighty (avoirdupois) for war-time establishments?

Thomas McKenny Hughes was the son of Rev. Joshua Hughes and his wife Margaret, daughter and of Sir Thomas McKenny, Lord Mayor of Dublin. He entered Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1853 (B.A., 1857), and joined the Geological Survey in 1861. He was Woodwardian Professor of Geology, Cambridge University, 1873-1917, and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1889. He was the prime mover behind the creation of the Sedgwick Museum in Cambridge. In November 1882 he married Mary Caroline Weston, daughter of Canon G. F. Weston.

1p., 8vo. In fair condition, on aged grey paper, laid down on paper mount, and slighty discoloured by glue used. He apologises for being unable to provide him with the desired order, 'but on any particular day you may require one I shall be glad to assist you as far as I can'. He suggests that they speak 'after lecture'. In a contemporary hand, written at foot of mount: 'Professor Robert Bentley F.L.S. (Professor of Botany) Author | born 1821.'

8pp., 8vo. Saddle-stitched into grey printed wraps. Printed in double column. In fair condition, on aged paper, in worn wraps. Inscribed at head of front cover to 'Profr. Richardson | with R. M. Butler's compts.' Covering the history of the city from the time of Ptolemy to the advent of the electric tram. Ends by noting the extensive rebuilding in the city, 'in part due to the reconstruction of areas destroyed in 1916 and 1922'. Scarce: no copies on COPAC or OCLC WorldCat.

103pp., 4to. Title-page and cast of characters followed by first act (paginated to 43), second act (paginated to B26) and third act (paginated to C32). In plain brown paper wraps with signature of 'Arthur Cox' in pencil on cover. Stained and worn. A handful of notes to third act in pencil and ink. The volume contains a copy of a duplicated typed form titled 'Prospect Account Particulars', in an envelope addressed in manuscript to 'Signor <?> | Valdano | Italy.' According to COPAC May's translation of the play was published by Penguin Books in 1962 and 1969.

1p., 4to. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. He thanks him for his reply to his 'plea for assistance in connexion with the possible publication by a foreign press of my history of Plague'. He had 'no intention' in writing 'of soliciting any financial aid from the Society, because any such solicitation would have been an impertinence on my part.' He would need £20,000 to have the book 'privately printed by one of the smaller English presses, such as Messrs.

On slip of paper, 7 x 13 cm. Reads: 'Norham Gardens. Oxford | Feb 28. - | I send a second article on Free Trade. | B Price'. In purple pencil on reverse: 'Bonamy Price | Professor Poll. Economy | Oxon.'

On 8.5 x 11 cm grey compliments slip printed in blue of 'Professor Sir Claus Moser, K.C.B., C.B.E., F.B.A. | Director'. In very good condition. The autograph, in red ink, reads: 'Best Regards | CM'.

He begins by commending the recipient's 'interesting paper': 'Of the justice of your remarks there can of course be no doubt, and even the small amount of knowledge that I have been able to acquire of the nature of rocks, has for some time past convinced me of the importance of what you '. He explains that he did his best 'in getting specimens of the Lafoten rocks, but the tast was very difficult and very unsuccessful, owing to the great hardness of the rocks. Quarries of course were absent'.

On 4.5 x 9.5 cm rectangle of paper, cut from letter. In fair condition, lightly aged, and laid down on part of leaf from album. Reads: 'Yours vy trly | Henry Thompson'.

The thirteen cards are all 13 x 7.5cm. All with 'POSTAL CARD' printed on front, and all with Cincinnati postmarks, nine also carrying Newport postmarks. All thirteen addressed to Siewers at Newport. The thirteen items are in good condition, on lightly-aged paper. All but one bear the purple oval stamp of the Royal Society of Arts, and most are docketted. Totalling 10pp., 4to; 3pp., 12mo. The earlier letters are addressed to Wood and the later ones to Menzies. The first letter (14 August 1915), in which Pite proposes becoming a member of the Society, is the only one not to concern the course of lectures.

On a rectangular label, gummed on the reverse. In fair condition, on aged paper, with traces of paper adhering to the gummed side. The notice reads: 'The Librarian regrets that he has to inform you that owing to your breach of Stat. Cap. XLI 9a (Consumption of Edibles) he must forbid you the use of the Bodleian and Camera until the matter can be dealt with by the Curators. | Dr. H. Koeppler, | Magdalen College.'

On piece of 21 x 13 cm India paper, laid down on a piece of thick paper, 33 x 24cm. The engraving is small in comparison, measuring around 8 x 6 cm, and showing a formally dressed and bearded Baxter's head and shoulders, facing to his right. Aged and dusty, with crease line to the mount at the foot. Stodart has signed in pencil in the bottom right-hand corner of the engraving paper, and the crease line bissects the signature and its underlining. At bottom right of mount, in pencil: 'Dr Baxter | Kings College'.

1p., large quarto. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper. With two embossed stamps ('VI PENCE' and 'I SHILLING ADDITIONAL DUTY') and ink stamp ('Nine Pence Quire') on reverse. '58' in the top right-hand corner. With occasional light corrections. The second poem ('Out of shaking') has the directions: 'No title & no commas', and the last but one ('Unfinished Elegy'), which is the longest at 4pp., is annotated: 'There ought to be three parts or possibly four.
