TYPESCRIPT

[A young Englishman in 1960s Japan.] Typescript of an untitled novel by an unnamed individual, regarding the cultural and personal adventures in Japan of character Christopher Peter Butterworth, with numerous emendations, additions and corrections.

Author:
[Japan in the 1960s; Japanese culture; English expatriate; unpublished typescript of novel]
Publication details:
No place or date. But clearly written by an English writer, and containing references dating it to the late 1960s.
£450.00

The present item - presumably autobiographical and definitely unpublished - is in a disordered state, and certainly not in the best of condition, with some parts apparently missing; but it is certainly worthy of attention, as a well-written production over which the author has taken some pains, with numerous manuscript additions and emendations in green and black felt-tip pen, describing from the point of view of a young Englishman 1960s Anglo-Japanese culture shock. 239pp, all but two of which are 4to, the two being foolscap.

[Lord Dawson of Penn; Nazi Germany; Lloyd George Visit] Three Typescripts: Visit to Labour Camp in Emsland Westphalia; Notes Sent to Lady Dawson and (same basic text) Memo. to Lady Dawson [heading in Dawson's hand, with adds/corrections by him]

Author:
Lord Dawson of Penn [Lloyd George group visits Hitler's Germany, 1936].
Publication details:
[1936]
£220.00

A. Typed account by Dawson of a 'Visit to Labour Camp in Emsland Westphalia'. [15 September 1936.] 8pp., fol. With a few manuscript emendations. The account shows Dawson and his colleague Thomas Jones completely hoodwinked as to the nature of what was a punishment camp for political prisoners. Dawson begins by describing Emsland as a 'large area, extending up to the Dutch frontier, consisting of a wide expanse of peat, rough grassland, parts of it under water, almost uninhabited'.

[Raymond Devos; Caryl Brahms & Ned Sherrin; typescript] OOM-PAH-PAH! Adapted by Caryl Brahms & Ned Sherrin.

Author:
Raymond Devos [(1922 – 2006), Belgian-French humorist, stand-up comedian and clown].
Publication details:
ENDOR PRODUCTIONS LIMITED, Royalty House, Dean Street, London W.1.
£250.00

Stiff paper covers clipped together, blue, stained, 95pp., 4to, text, good condition. From the lack of information about this play, it obviously bombed. The script by Ned Sherrin and Caryl Brahms was called Oom - Pah - Pah. It was a translation of a long - running Parisian hit Les Pupitres, which means the music stands. The idea was simple. A second - rate orchestra runs out of money and disbands. The musicians wander around Paris using their instruments in weird and witty ways to earn a sou or two. Based on Devos's Les Pupitres (see Braham Murray, The Worst it can be is a Disaster, p.36.
