See his entry in the Oxford DNB. From the Piffard papers. Signed ‘W Sharpey’ on ticket engraved in copperplate on one side of 15 x 10.5 cm card. In fair condition, a little worn and somewhat discoloured with age, and with short vertical crease to the left of the signature. Blind-stamped with ‘Treasury Seal’. The signature is at bottom right, with number of ticket (59) and the initials of the secretary ‘’ at bottom left. Attractively laid out, with text reading ‘University College, London. / Anatomy and Physiology. / William Sharpey, MD. / Professor. / Admit Mr.

A scarce piece of scientific publishing ephemera. No other copy traced. 8pp, 8vo. Aged, worn and spotted, with staples rotted away. The cover is headed 'Librairie C. Reinwald & Cie, 15, rue des Saints-P?res, Paris / Derni?res publications / relative aux sciences m?dicales et naturelles.' Delage's work ('Vient de para?tre') is noticed on the cover, with an 'Extrait de la table des mati?res' extending to the end of the second page. Other many other publications noticed are 'L'Embryologie compar?e par Le Dr Louis Roule'. and 'Trait? d'anatomie compar?e pratique par Carl Vogt et ?mile Yung'.

1p, 4to. In fair condition, aged and creased. Folded twice. Headed by Macleod 'Physiological Laboratory' and addressed to 'Professor Luigi Luciani'. He begins by explaining that '[t]hrough Dr G. A. Barricelli [i.e. Giovanni Alfonso Barricelli (1873-1934)] of this city' he has received 'the most interesting collection of "researches on Physiology and allied Sciences" published in honour of your 25th year as Professor in Rome'.

The recipient of the present letter is not named, but it is the scientific bookseller and publisher John Nourse (1705-1780), who the following year would published the 'Lectures' referred to in the letter: 'An Introduction to Physiology, being A Course of Lectures upon The most important Parts of the Animal Oeconomy', 'Printed for J. Nourse at the Lamb opposite Katherine-Street in the Strand.

For his study of acetylcholine as agent in the chemical transmission of nerve impulses (neurotransmission) Dale shared the 1936 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Otto Loewi. For more information on letter's recipient Richard A. Hunter see Munk's Roll. Both items in good condition, lightly aged, the letter having a few unobtrusive pinholes to the top inner corner. ONE: TLS to Hunter, signed 'H. H. Dale'. 1p, 12mo. The letterhead, in addition to naming the five trustees, states that the 'Scientific Secretary of the Wellcome Trust is 'Dr. F. H. K.

Lord Adrian was Professor of Physiology in the University of Cambridge 1937-1951; President of the Royal Society 1950-1955; Master of Trinity College, Cambridge, 1951-1965; president of the Royal Society of Medicine 1960-1962; Chancellor of the University of Cambridge 1967-1975. In 1932 Adrian and Sir Charles Sherrington receiving the 1932 Nobel Prize for Physiology 'for their discoveries regarding the functions of neurons'.The recipient Otto Maas obtained his medical degree from the University of Strasbourg in 1898. Between 1910 and 1932 he was Director of the clinic in Berlin-Buch.

1p., 12mo. In fair condition, lightly aged. He is enclosing 'the Extract from "Men and Women of the Time"' that the editor sent him, with corrections and additions, and would like to see a proof.

1p., 12mo. On aged and worn paper, with loss to a few words of engraved text. A good piece of Royal Society ephemera: a nicely engraved form, with ornate letterhead. Addressed to 'A. Ramsay Esq | FGS', and signed 'M. Foster'. Acknowledging Ramsay's 'mark of consideration' in sending 'Scientific Roll. Vol. 1. Nos. 4-7'.

Paginated, [111]-122, printed wraps, back cover listing John Heywood's "Educational Works". Tiny holes at spine indicate formerly bound in volume, aging but good condition. COPAC lists a copy at the BL, and within the series held by Manchester. No copy listed on WorldCat.
