CIRCUIT

Lauriston Leonard Batten studied at Trinity College, Cambridge (see his entry in Alum. Cantab.). He was admitted at the Inner Temple in 1882 and called to the bar four years later. KC, 1905. Bencher, 1914. The present collection is from the papers of his colleague on the Oxford Circuit, Sir Richard Harington (1861-1931), 12th baronet, who was educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford. Called to the Bar in 1886, he practised on the Oxford Circuit before taking up an appointment as a Puisne Judge in the High Court of Justice at Fort William in Bengal in 1899.

1p., 4to. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn. Addressed on second leaf of bifolium to 'Mr. Strong | Redcross Street | Cripplegate'. He would like to be informed 'by the bearer whether the Election for Bedford comes on on Wednesday & when Mr. Whitbread wishes me to be there - If we set out tomorrow I will thank you to mention the news that I may make my arrangements accordingly'. Whitbread was the son of the celebrated brewer Samuel Whitbread.

The title-page states that the cases are heard 'Before John William Willis Bund, Esq., Chairman, and Richard Holmden Amphlett, Esq., Vice-Chairman.' The calendar consists of a table of fifteen prisioners, over four double-pages, with entries divided into fifteen columns, giving name of prisoner, age, trade, 'Degree of Instruction', details of committing magistrate, date of warrant, date of receipt into custody, details of 'Offence as charged in the Commitment'.

The calendar is divided into fourteen columns (the last five blank), and gives details of name of prisoner, age, trade, 'Degree of Instruction', details of committing magistrate, date of warrant, date of receipt into custody, details of 'Offence as charged in the Commitment'. It provides an interesting insight into social history.

ONE: 1p., 4to. Embossed with government seal at head. In good condition, lightly aged. Reads: 'I The Right Honourable William Page Baron Hatherley, Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain, do hereby sanction the closing of the County Courts of the Circuit No. 34 during four weeks in the month of August next, Richard Harington Esqre., The Judge of the Same Courts, being desirous of holding Courts in the month of September next. | Hatherley C'. In envelope with Hatherley's signature ('Hatherley') at bottom-left of front, addressed in autograph to 'Richard Harington Esq | Heath Lodge | Hanwell'.

4to, 168 pp. Text clear and complete, in a number of different hands. Internally tight, on lightly-aged paper. In loose buff calf half-binding, with the front of the green cloth boards stamped in gilt with 'FEE BOOK [in scroll] | E. G. M. CARMICHAEL'. Every opening in a spread of seven columns across the two pages: Date, Solicitor, Name of Cause or Matter, Description, Fee, When paid, Remarks. Broadsheet, c. 42 x 52cm, fold marks, punch-holes (minor textual loss), some foxing in margins, 3 " closed tear (no textual loss), three columns of names inc. R. Stafford Cripps, six women, total more than 50 names, plus officers (e.g. Clerk of Assize, C.F. Lloyd).

On one side of a piece of vellum, 34.5 x 42.5 cm. Folded into a docketed 9 x 21 cm packet. In good condition, lightly-aged. Signed by 'A. E. Cockburn', and by two witnesses: 'J H Brewer' of Curzon Street, Mayfair, and 'Henry William Frayling | Clerk to the said Sir A E. Cockburn', with remains of his red wax seal. Also signed at foot by the Queen's Remembrancer 'W H Walton'.

8vo, 8pp. Unbound. Stitched as issued. Text complete and clear. Good: lightly-aged and creased. The order is on pp.1-3. Followed by (over five pages): 'SCHEDULE', consisting of 'Circuits of the Judges. Civil and Criminal.', 'Autumn Circuit. Criminal Business Only, except where otherwise stated.' and 'Easter Circuit.'

Fifth Bishop of Calcutta (1778-1858). 2 pages, 8vo. In very good condition. Signed 'Daniel Calcutta'. Fisher's note reads 'I sanction the return of the Rev Mr Lincke back again to Burdwan his former station pending the confirmation of the Bishop on his return | Henry Fisher | Commissary | 22d. Sept. 1838'.
