In 1907 the ‘Builder’ describes ‘Mr. W. F. Slater, Overhouse-chambers, Burslem’ as a ‘Surveyor’, and in 1909 the ‘Electrical Review’ refers to him as an ‘architect’ at the same address. Five years later ‘Building News’ reports that Slater is ‘architect to the education committee’. In 1921 (‘The Surveyor’) he is the ‘surveyor, Urban Council Offices, Wolstanton, Staffs’, and in 1926 (‘Public Works Weekly Surveyor’) he is ‘architect to the corporation’.

Laid out in three columns on one side of a 71 x 26 cm piece of newsprint stock. With two illustrations in text ('Chalfont St. Giles: the only remaining Milton home' and 'Facsimile of a Milton Sonnet'). Aged and brittle, with a few words of text lost in two vertical folds which have been repaired with archival tape. Section headings are 'Commemorations', 'Manchester Exhibitions and Addresses', 'A Tribute', 'The English Patriot', 'Milton and Music', 'His Optimism', 'His Self-Confidence' and 'A Poetic Life'.

Report: 8vo, xvi + 115 pp. In original blue printed wraps. Index: 8vo, ten pages, unbound, continuing pagination to 126. Both items fair, on aged paper, and both carrying unobtrusive stamp of the University of Hull. Chipping and repair with archival tape to wrap of 'Report'. The Committee was 'appointed to examine the Publications printed by Order of this House [of Commons] or presented to it through Public Departments, and to call attention to any case in which unnecessary expense has been incurred'.
