WHITAKER

A fascinating and revealing collection of material, touching on questions of censorship and sexual morality in twentieth-century Britain, as well as the problems of publication during the Second World War. From the papers of Sir John Pollock (1872-1963), and relating to the 1943 revival of his 'Damaged Goods', a translation of Eugène Brieux's scandalous play 'Les Avariés'. Written in 1901, Brieux's play concerns the effects of a diagnosis of syphilis on a respectable family, and was met with outrage on its first appearance in Paris in 1902.

Impressively printed in black on one side of a 58 x 43 cm sheet. In fair condition, aged and worn, with slight loss to the edge on one side, and light creasing. Impressively laid out in copperplate, beneath the College's coat of arms. The signatures are arranged in two columns, with the first two bracketted as 'Vice Presidents': '[left-hand column] J. W.

On 12 x 11 cm piece of watermarked laid paper. Lightly aged, with slight evidence of previous mount at head (not affecting text). Sent in response to a request for an autograph. Reads: 'London. Nov 11th. 60 | Obediently Yours | E Landseer. | (To J. H. Whitaker. | Manchester)'.

1p., 12mo. Good, with the blank second leaf of the bifolium having slight staining from mount, and having laid down on it a newspaper cutting headed 'DEATH OF SIR C. EASTLAKE', docketd 'E & T Dec 26/65'. The note reads: 'Sir Chas Eastlake presents his compts. to Mr Whitaker & begs to inform him that Mr Millais' address is No. 7. Cromwell Place | Kensington. S.W. | 7. Fitzroy Sqr. (London) | Feby 5 1863.'

Two pages, 12mo. Very good, with the merest spotting at head. He 'will be at West Drayton by the train due there nearest to 4 o'clock'. He has no time-table to hand, 'but shall see one at Jermyn St. to-morrow'.
