MAKING

One page, 12mo, bifolium, stain partially obscuring address, chipped (without loss of text), text clear and complete. The Duke of Buckingham requests Mr Wyld will inform him whether there are not more parts of the Ordnance Map [?] than those which he has sent him, and also whether he has [sent?] the Maps of London & Norway which the Duke ordered at the same time he did the Ordnance Map of England.

3pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged.. Addressed at start to 'Cher Monsieur', with indistinct name of recipient following Haden's signature. He is sending him, 'by the hands of Mr. Chapman the sum of 50 francs wh. I have received on yr. behalf from the authorities of South Kensington Museum – and have obtained the promise of this office that yr. Two splendid etchings (the large group of flowers) that he suspended among the Chefs D'Oeuvres of the Establishment.' He concludes: 'Mr. Chapman will explain the hurry in wh. I write'.

One page, on the recto of the second leaf of a bifolium, leaf dimensions 31 x 20 cm. In fair condition on lightly-aged paper with slight wear to extremities. According to his entry in the catalogue of the Bibliothèque Nationale, Charles was a 'Géographe attaché au Dépôt général de la guerre en 1933 [sic], ancien membre de la Société de Géographie. - Dessinateur, il eut une production cartographique très abondante à partir de 1823'. Neatly laid out.

Each item is on a sheet of laid paper, 39 x 29 cm, and each with the Roycroft watermark. Both items are grubby, with wear and creasing to extremities, but with the design and much of the margin entirely undamaged. Both have an identical block of printed text (roughly 13.5 x 9 cm) at the centre: 'THE truth is that in human service there is no low or high degree: the woman who scrubs is as WORTHY of RESPECT as the man who Preaches | ELBERT HUBBARD'.

12mo, 3 pp, 35 lines. Good, on lightly aged paper, and with a thin strip from mount adhering at head of blank verso of second leaf of bifolium. Discusses 'the restriction on the importation of paper and paper making materials', imposed 'with the object of securing more tonnage space in incoming vessels'.

Map-maker, geographe, geographer. (One page, folio,some creasing and soiling, mainly good, clear and complete. This is a formal document in his best hand, in which he requests the opportunity to exhibit at "l'exposition" his latest work, "une carte de la France industrielle indiquent la position de tous les lieux qui ont fournis quelques produits aux 5 expositions, la designation de ces produits . . . ." He says how far he is advanced. An important letter.
