As a result of her pioneering work at the Child Welfare Centre at St Andrews, Simpson was appointed to a sub-committee of the Scientific Advisory Committee set up by the Department of Health (see Jaqueline Jenkinson, ‘Scotland’s Health 1919-1948’, 2002). Waterston was Bute Professor of Anatomy at the University of St Andrews from 1914 to 1942. In 1913, while Professor of Anatomy at King's College, London, he was the first authority to debunk the Piltdown Man hoax.

She couldn't reply quickly to her correspondent's clever & interesting letter because she was ill and indeed doubted whether I should write any more to anybody. I have since read it to many members of Parl[iamen]t and you , who are so humble, should have heard how reespectful & attentive the were to my 'Jamaica correspondent' - THere have been debates on West Indian subjects, which made your letter really (even to strangers) extremely interesting: - to me it was a great treat.

12mo, 2 pp. Bifolium with mourning border. 39 lines of text, 12 of which have been damaged, presumably on the removal of the item from an autograph album, which has resulted in a large hole to the upper half of the second leaf of the bifolium. Begins 'My Dear Mr.
