INSCRIBED John Lewis Roget | from his affectionate father | the Author. With the bookplate of S.R. Romilly [Samuel Romilly Roget, a later editor of the Thesaurus]. S.R. Roget's obituary is in Grace's Guide. Annotations in tiny hand, probably Roget himself but possibly his son who inherited his mantle (see image): a. P.203, under WEALTH, 'Almighty Dollar' term Ist used in Wm Jennings 'Creole Village'.

[Pen & Ink Drawings] Recollections of Ireland (title) in folder, 6pp. fol., light brown cartridge paper, inc. titlepage which has one sketch, 17.5 x 8.5cm. The other five pages all have multiple small sketches, many caricature, ranging from 17.5cm x 8.5 to 2 x 3cm, 8 on [p.2], 13 on [p.3], 8 on [p.4], 10 on [p.5].

From the Roget family papers, and certainly of later date than the two schoolboy commonplace books by Jean Roget offered separately. Roget is not named as the author, but the handwriting is his, and the spine bears the remains of a blue paper label with the words ‘MSS of the Rev. J. Ro[get]’ on it the same nineteenth-century hand (P. M. Roget's?) as the two commonplace books.

The two items were commenced while Roget was a fifteen-year-old schoolboy in Geneva, and nine years before his 1775 emigration to London. The two volumes of the same dimensions, but not uniform. Vol.1: 179pp, small 4to. Vol.2: 146pp, small 4to. Both tight and internally in good condition, lightly aged, in worn card wraps, each with a different stencilled design on the covers.

Alvise Cornaro (d.1566), usually known as Luigi Cornaro, published the four books of his celebrated ‘Discorsi’ between 1583 and 1595. For Peter Romilly, see his son Sir Samuel Romilly’s entry in the Oxford DNB, and also that of his grand-nephew P. M. Roget. Autograph manuscript of unpublished translation. [1] + 89pp, 12mo. Internally good and tight, on lightly-aged watermarked laid paper; in brown calf binding, rebacked. Front pastedown carries armorial bookplate of Peter Romilly (‘Persevere’) and ownership inscription of ‘P. M. Roget’.

Roget had parted company with the firm by October of the same year, moving to Longmans, while De La Rue continued to market their own rival version. Rarely found complete and undamaged.
