See the entry for the ‘Sailor King’ in the Oxford DNB. On 12 x 7 cm piece of paper, cut from the cover of a frank. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn, with slight smudging and a small patch of light discoloration at centre (away from signature). Set out in customary fashion, and addressed by the future king (with the year cropped): ‘London. December fourth [...] / Dr: Carmichael Smith / M. D. / Upper [?] / Near Staines / Middlesex’. Firm signature at bottom left, with slight smudging to loops of the initial ‘C’: ‘Clarence’. See Image.

See her entry in the Oxford DNB. 4pp, 12mo. On bifolium In fair condition, lightly aged, with stub from mount adhering to the inner margin of the recto, and obscuring a few words of text. The male recipient is not named: the letter is signed ‘Agnes Strickland / Historian of the Queens of England and Queens of Scotland’. By the advice of the publisher, Daldy, she is enquiring after ‘quiet comfortable lodgings at Warwick next Monday 25th till Tuesday August 2nd during the Archaeological Meeting in your antient historical town at which I have promised to be sent’.

176pp., 4to. With four photogravure plates and numerous excellent facsimiles in text. A splendid production in red cloth gilt, with tissue guards to the plates and all edges gilt. In good very good condition, lightly aged and worn.

On both sides of a card with a mourning border. Good, on lightly-aged grey card. If Johnson does not miss more than two lectures he will be in no danger of 'losing a certificate through failure of attendance'; if he misses three, 'it becomes a serious, but not hopeless question. Four absences would certainly disqualify'. Ryle will put a note against Johnson's name, 'that you have been made captive by the "flu"', and trusts that he will 'soon be released from the grip of that detestable "pestilence"'.

Reads 'Marlborough House | I have read with great interest the Report of the work of the Field Force Fund and I hope the Appeal for Friends will meed with a generous response to enable the Comforts that are required to be Sent to our Soldiers at the Front - | Alexandra'. The homogeneity of the ink implies that the item is a printed copy. Note: Field Force Fund, 1916-1918.
