Actor and theatre manager (DNB). One page, some damage marginally affecting the text. He thanks him for his gift of the poem "The Charge of the Light Brigade".

Author, see DNB. Two pages, 8vo, good condition, with additional biographical notes by another hand. "Will you please to read the enclosed, & ascertain for [me?] if there is a Polish translation of "Jessica" ["Jessica's First Prayer"]. My cousin, Dr Manning, several times told me it had been translated into every European laguage; but he may not have thought of Polish. /Could you also tell Mr. Stevens for me that I never received the October [no.?]. of the Leisure Hour or Sunday at Home .

Legal and misc. writer (1750-1832). Part of page (trimmed), 5 x 5", stained but text clear and complete. "I wished to see you, on your return from Clark, tomention my doubt whether the manuscript, which I put into your hands, is proper in its present state, for insertion in the review, which [excisions] you notived [excison] to [inserted] me;- If you will have the goodness to return it to me, I will endeavour to cast it into a more proper form for your publication:-".

Irish novelist and editor, see DNB. She is not allowed to leave the house but cxan have visitors. Her husband, Samuel Carter Hall, has been very ill as has his nephew Sanford Rochat. She thanks God that Rochat "is able to get back in a quiet way to the War Office - and Mr Hall is working not so quietly at "the Art Journal again" - but it has been a dangerous season. She looks forward to seeing him and reports on the health of friends.

Piece of paper, 3 x 4", sl. soiled,on which Sinclair has scrawled: Sir John Sinclair called.- Would be glad to see Mr Godwin to breakfast on Wednesday next at 9. or to dinner at 6."

American born illustrator and writer of burlesques. One page, 8vo, soiled, chipped and creased but text legible and complete. He is upset at his correspondent's circumstances but has to meet "an enormous doctor's bill and am really unable to do what I would be proud to do." He asks him to "share with me what klitle we can spare and we will see what the morrow will bring forth." He anticipates a meeting and hopes for better luck for his correspondent.

English dramatist (1784-1862). One page, octavo. Ruckled, and with several closed tears. Reply to request for autograph. Reads 'Dear Sir, | Here it is. | Yours truly, | James Sheridan Knowles.'

Advocate, held courtesy title " Lord" in 1837 until he resigned in 1853. (See Boase.) Two pages, 4to, staining at edges, small tear, text clear and complete. He takes the liberty of introducing a Charles M Laren [Maclaren, see DNB, editor of "The Scotsman"], who expects to pass a month in Rome a few weeks hence . . .

Or John Adams Acton (DNB). Sculptor. Three pages, 8vo, some staining but mainly good condition.

Queen of Hungary and Empress of Germany. In German. One page, circa 2.5 x 2 feet, vellum, folded, attractive, red mark where seal is missing, some fading but signature clear Item bought in The Czech Republic (Bohemia).. Scan provided on request.

[William Macready (DNB)], actor-manager, declining a manuscript play. Originally from a larger archive, the residue of which is described in #3157 (Hewlett's papers), this and other items appear in my ABE inventory in book id#s 3124-3156.

Children's Author and Editor. Two pages, 8vo, attached to slightly larger card (a page from an autograph album), good consition. Text: "I am much obliged to you for the offer of your tale, but think it better to return it as I am fully supplied at preset with material for my Magazine. Will you allow me to say that it strikes me as being better adapted for such a puvblication as the "Monthly Packet" which is intended for rather older readres than mine." DNB entry: "In May 1866 Mrs. Gatty established a monthly periodical for young people called ‘Aunt Judy's Magazine.’"

Authority on the Balks, etc. (DNB). Fragment of a letter, c.6" x 2", laid down on slightly larger card from album, good condition. Text: By the time I leave, I hope we shall have our Serbian expedition virtually ready. The great trouble is to find a means of transit: it is hoped to get out all the way by ship. I will write agin: this has to catch the post."

The Examiners' Office in early C19th England. Winburne has made suggestions for improving the Examiners' Office. Dancer replies with a review of the nature and problems of the Office, the nature of witnesses (unclean, diseased), the place of interview (a prison room, etc.). Dancer describes the onerous nature of the examiner's job, the need for experience, and finally refers to the "most eligible plan" which is in minutes supplied to Winburne.

Blackwood, Frederick Temple Hamilton-Temple, first Marquis of Dufferin and Ava 1826-1902, diplomatist and administrator (DNB). One page, 8vo, tarces of having ben laid down in album, text cleqar and complete. "My dear Murray / A thousand thanks for your kind little note about Mrs Elliot's book . . ."

1837-1923, schoolmaster, fellow of King's College, Cambridge, and historian (DNB). One page, 8vo, small chip not affecting text. He wants to know how she is getting on in Rome. They are missing her, and the weather is "bitterly cold".

Publisher ("Hurst & Blackett"). Two pages, 8vo, conjoint blank leaf, verso with remnants of laying down process, mourning black edge, text clear and complete, saying that he'll call on Dixon the following morning at the Athenaeum Office "to settle the acc[oun]t for the last issue of New America and also to consult y[ou]r wishes as to the new volume wh[ich] is to be prepared for the Autumn" [ "Spiritual Wives (pubd 1868]) which led to him being accused of indecency.]

Elizabeth Vassall Fox, Lady Holland, Society Hostess (DNB). Remnants of laying down process, chipped, text complete and clear, as follows: Lady Holland informs Mr Jeffery that in the set of English Poets sent to here there are six volumes wanting viz. 59, 60, 61, 62, 63 & 64 - which she wishes him to find as soon as possible in order to have the collection bound - She retruns one number of the Edinburgh [Review] as by mistake he has sent her two- / Holland House / Friday"

Bookseller (see DNB). One page, 8vo, conjoint blank laid down on backing paper. Text clear and complete, as follows:"I have just learned that the assignees of Sherwood & Co [publishers] are within a month to make a final dividend in that Estate & write this note to inform you of that circumstance in order that time may be given to the Bond Bill holder to preapre their proofs."

Scientist, 1818-1898 (DNB).Two pages, 8vo, affixed by margin of verso to mount), accepting an invitation and explaining his delay in replying. "I have this moment arrived from Edinburgh where I have been canvassing for the Chair of Chemistry. This therefore must be my apology for not having replied to your note of invitation of the 26th (?), which was not forwarded to me. I shall have much pleasure in waiting upon you on Friday, unless summoned back to Edinburgh by my canvassing Committee before that time.

Three pages, 4to, fold marks, some marking, text clear and complete. In response to Knox's letter he has been looking out for "a Bag of good Demerara Coffee for you, and have at last succeeded." His brother-in-law who was "purchasing a few Bags for his Friends" selected a bag for him. "I have forwarded it to you by the Trusty Steamboat, with Excise Permit - it is addressed to you at Glassford Street - the Import Mark & Number are P[with tail] No.

Commander-in-Chief. c.3 x 4", laid down, fold marks and slight staining but mainly good condition, last few lines in which he says "my dear Duke, / Yours most sincerely / George."

Piece of grey card, dimensions roughly 5 1/2 inches by 4 inches. In poor condition: grubby and discoloured, and crudely mounted on a piece of card. Novelist and journalist (1841-1907). Clearly in reply to a request for an autograph, Hatton has written, in a large hand, 'With pleasure - | Yours very truly | Joseph Hatton | Dec 1901'. Neatly docketed with a number '30' in a circle.

Commissioner (Office of the Master General of the Ordnance). Duncombe is instructing a Mr Sherborne of the Tower of London to go to Chatham, Gravesend and Woolwich to see "how many gunnes are mounted & of w[ha]t nature". He expects a report the following morning. The barbarian who cut the signature off also cut off the date, but this letter could well predate the Dutch raid up the Thames Estuary in June 1667 which particularly affected the fleet at Chatham, and indicate preparations.

Laird (presumably the 'Francis Laird of Peterborough Court Fleet Street' whose will was proved in May 1825) was the author of 'A topographical and historical description of the County of Rutland' (1815) and 'A topographical and historical description of the County of Worcester' (1818). Upcott (1779-1845) was a noted aniquary and collector of autographs. One page, quarto. In poor condition, grubby and creased, with fraying to extremities and traces of mount and some loss to one edge (affecting one word of text). Repaired loss of triangular fragment from breaking open wafer.

Cartoonist. One page, 8vo, in blue crayon [?] smudged and slightly soiled. Text as follows: Punch Table // Dr. Sir/ I have had the opinion of the Punch staff & without hesitation all agree there is nothing whatever of Leech in it, neother the design, drawing or writing. There is not a touch of Leech in it . . ." [Several words underlined for emphasis.]

Cartoonist. Subscription of letter as follows: "Believe me / yours faithfully / Will Owen", c.3.5 x 1".

Two pages, 8vo, browned and with tear at fold, but text clear and complete. He describes how someone called to ask him to buy benefit tickets for a charitable purpose. He declined on principle, but noticed later an address and decided to write to that address to explain that he would wish to help anyone in whom his correspondent took an interest. He encouraged another visit from the original agent. [Presumably the fact that Ross (DNB) was a fellow-artist influenced his course of action.]
