4to, 168 pp. Text clear and complete, in a number of different hands. Internally tight, on lightly-aged paper. In loose buff calf half-binding, with the front of the green cloth boards stamped in gilt with 'FEE BOOK [in scroll] | E. G. M. CARMICHAEL'. Every opening in a spread of seven columns across the two pages: Date, Solicitor, Name of Cause or Matter, Description, Fee, When paid, Remarks. Giving a rounded picture of the activities of a well-connected provincial solicitor. (Represented Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin - another Worcestershire man, M.P. for Bewdley - at Lady Yate's funeral in 1936.) The first two entries, in January 1895, are for 'Brief fr Lady Northwick the respondent appeals from a conviction fr game trespass' and 'Breif for respondents on appeal fr conviction for permitting gaming'. Other cases involve horsestealing', manslaughter. Yearly incomes sometimes given in pencil at the head of versos. Details given of payment by The Times (28 May 1908) for 'Reporting at [Autumn & Winter] Assizes', the first of several such fees for 'Circuit reporting'. In 1914 he receives two guineas for an 'Article published in "Daily Post"'. After the Great War he acts for the Ministries of Munitions, and Labour. The following year Carmichael acts for the Director of Public Prosecutions in the Court of Criminal Appeal. Carmichael was educated at Harrow and Oriel College, Oxford. Called to the bar at the Inner Temple. Cricketer with Worcestershire 2nd XI, 1893-1910. Author of 'The Law relating to the Telegraph, the Telephone, and the Submarine Cable' (1904).
