Accompanying this item is a piece of paper with the following note in a mid-twentieth-century hand: ‘Interesting because of the very rare signature of Everard Peck, pioneer printer Father of Wm. F. Peck’. He was a bookbinder from Connecticut who moved to Rochester around 1816 and opened a bookstore. He moved into printing and publishing, founded the successful weekly Telegraph newspaper and later became a banker. He was a generous benefactor of the early city, co-founding the University of Rochester and the Rochester Orphan Asylum and becoming a leader in the Female Charitable Society.

See her entry in the Oxford DNB. 14.5 x 10.5 cm black and white print on matte paper stock. In 24 x 29.5 cm folder with ‘Camera Portrait’ in fancy letters embossed on front cover, which is inscribed at bottom right: ‘To Ivan with best wishes from / Eve’. The work is attractively presented by the photographer by being laid down on a 17.5 x 15 cm rectangle of tissue paper in turn laid down on a 16.5 x 12.5 piece of black paper which shows through the tissue and is itself laid down on the recto of the second leaf of the folder.

From the Macqueen-Pope papers. The occasion of the article was the forthcoming premiere of Rattigan’s play ‘The Sleeping Prince’, Olivier’s production of which, at the Phoenix Theatre in London, opened on 5 November 1953. The movie rights were bought by Marilyn Monroe, and the Hollywood film appeared in 1957 as ‘The Prince and the Showgirl’, with Olivier reprising his stage role, and Rattigan also writing the filmscript.
