90[6]pp., 8vo (six-page catalogue of Bell & Daldy's "New and Standard Publications" at end), in slipcase, green cloth in good condition, pattern in relief, gold motif of laurels surrounding the title, hinge strain at title/frontispiece, some speckling throughout, some pencilled underlining, and childish daubing of colour onto three of the illustrations. INSCRIBED as follows: "This book was written by my mother [letters crossd out] the stories read to me & Walter for our amusement in 1857-8 | J Parker Smith". ENCLOSED: Autograph Letter Signed "George Bell" of Bell & Daldy publishers, to "Dear Sir", 20 May 1858, 3pp., 8vo, saying: "We think the addition to Redfield will be sufficient to make up a 2/- or 2/6 volume with an illustration & we are ready to put it to press. | Small books of this kind do not yield profit unless one can venture upon 2000 or 5000 copies | We do not feel that we can venture on more than 1000. We propose to print this number at our own cost & risk, to present the auhtoress with a dozen copies - and if we sell the 1000 7 find we can venture upon a reprint, we would purchase the copyright at such a price as may be then agreed upon - | If you will let me know if this proposition meets with your approval we can proceed at once."
