Three pages, 4to, grubby, chipped, text faded in parts but readable and complete. "Sir/ On calling today at Mr Jefferies's [sic] Shop, to pay for & take away a Suetonius [underlined] & a Sallust [underlined] which he bought (after giving his name)[parenthesis underlined] desired to be set apart for him, a few weeks ago. Sir John Henderson, was to his great Surprise, told by Mr Jeferies's Shop=man, that the two books in question were Sold by Mr Jefferies to some other person [phrase underlined from "to"] & could not be found. Sir John Henderson hopes there is some mistake in what the Shop man said to him, <&?> is extremely unwilling to form any unfavorable [underlined] opinion, or express it rashly [underlined] on the present occasion. He begs Leave only to observe, that when [underlined] he bought the books, the price was Distinctly specified, Viz,for the / Suetonius £2.0.0/ Sallust £0.18.0// £2.18.0/ And Sir John, at the same time, as distinctly specified, that, as he was collecting [underlined] for a complete Set of the [underlined from "complete"]/ Delphin Delphin [repeated] Classics, he wished to the whole at some time, , <&?> that it might be some little time before he came to pay for & take those 2 Books away . all which was agreed to [two words underlined], by Mr Jefferies at the time./ Such being the Circumstances in the Case, Sir John Henderson thinks it proper to take this method of giving Mr Jefferies an opportunity to explain Matter, or to recover the books from whoever has got possession of tehm. On sending them to No. 24 York Place, Baker Street. The/ person whio brings them will reeive teh price agreed upon, for which it cannot be denied, by Mr Jefferies people, that those 2 vols were positively, distinctly & unconditionally Sold [underlined from "positively"], to Sir John Henderson/ JH/ 25 July 1808/ P.S./ When Sir John bought those 2 vols, He showed other 3 in the same vellum [underlined] Binding, Viz:/ Catullus./ / Prudentius./ And, it appears somewhat remarkable [underlined] that, of the 5, only the 2 which Sir John bought should now not be visible [underlined]./ The favour of an Answer in writing is requested." The Ireland who might have been mentioned in the letter from unknown (Taylor?) to Caulfield at Jefferies had a friend, John Henderson, an actor.
