The second of the three volumes of Stanley's lectures, subtitled 'From Samuel to the Captivity', was published by John Murray in 1865, the first volume having appeared two years earlier. The autograph draft is 4pp., 12mo, on a bifolium embossed with the Stanley crest (motto: 'Sans Changer'). Good, on lightly-aged paper. An early draft, heavily corrected, of a passage beginning on p.60 of vol.II of the first printing: 'His refuge in the centre of Prophetical influence had been discovered.' It ends on pp.61-62, vol.II, of first printing: 'But a higher than Saul or David selected this act of Achimelech as the one incident in David's life on which to bestow His especial commendation; because it contained - however tremulously and guardedly expressed - the great Evangelical truth that the ceremonial law, however rigid, must give way before the claims of suffering humanity.' Five leaves of proofs are present (10pp., 8vo), consisting of two bifoliums and a single leaf, containing ten pages paginated 49-50 and 53-60. These are also heavily worked over, and exhibit marked changes from the first published version. At the foot of the first page Stanley has written 'Proof 1/8/64'.
