8vo volume, bound up and interleaved for official use. Internally sound and tight, on aged paper; in worn black leather quarter-binding with repair to loose boards. In gilt on spine is the title 'P. P. L.', with 'T. K. S.' at the foot, and these abbreviations are also present in pencil on the title page. The printed guide has a total of 282pp: title leaf + pp.7-24, 43-44, 47-258, 261-280, 357-374. It is interleaved from p.48 to the end with 128 leaves (256pp). The printed pages of the lists of 'Provincial Post Offices' (pp.47-258), 'Provincial Branch Offices and Town Sub-Offices' (pp.262-280) and 'Offices in the London District' (pp.357-371) are annotated in red ink, with further red-ink annotations on the interleaved blanks. The majority of these annotations consist of providing two- or three-letter abbreviations (for telegraphic purposes?) for a large number of offices (for example 'ABBEYLEIX' is 'AKC', and 'Youlgrave, Bakewell' is 'YGV'); there are also a number of additions ('{ July 1901 Chipping Sodbury | Augt. 2. 1901 under Bristol-'; 'Northwood - now under Watford. June 4/01'), and corrections ('Bawtry. RSO (1901 not Post Town)'), some of the latter ('"Oban" - Manuscript -'; 'Broadmills typo.', 'Alveston. in M.S. on S-on-Avon.'; 'error "Bramford Speke"'; 'COO? letters not clear. (on Llanorwyney)') indicating editorial involvement. The meaning of some of the annotations is unclear ('Bless on wrapper'; 'Mullingar on unappro'; 'Havering on blue paper. T.10.'; 'DREM. (DGL) only on Label - Augt 28/01'; 'Label "Norton" a Market Drayton date stamp as list'). In addition there are three full-page tables in red and black ink. The first, at the start of the volume, is headed 'Post Towns', and consists of twelve columns, with the last ten dated between 21 December 1900 and 19 February 1902. It is arranged in 24 ranks from A to Y, with totals in two ranks beneath these. The second table, facing p.373, has no heading. It is arranged in seven columns, with the first carrying dates from 15 April 1901 to 19 April 1902. The middle five columns are headed: English; Irish; Scotch; London; Rubber. The last column carries totals. The last table, at the end of the volume, is similar to the second, with an initial column of dates between 17 February 1900 and 12 April 1901, followed by five columns with headings: General; Local; London; Total; Rubber.
