8vo, 2 pp. 36 lines. Text clear and complete. Fair, on aged paper. Regarding a replacement for 'Mr Coggan', who is resigning the office of Chief Constable for the Isle of Axholme 'at the next Caistor Sessions'. Johnson has been 'for several years & down to the time of the new Commission o[f] peace the only acting Justice in the Isle', and expects 'some Regard' to be paid to his recommendation. He will 'give the Court some reasons which incline me to think that Mr. Gibbison ought to be preferr'd to his Competitor Mr. Gervas'. Describes his 'Title' to the recipient's 'ffriendship', giving tantalising clues towards the recipient's identity: 'you have a sort of hereditary Right to mine, for your ffather, your Uncle Hildebrand, & that worthy old Senator whose names you bear (& whose Memory I honour) were all of 'em my intimate ffriends & Acquaintance as Thos. Pake (if living) can tell you'. He has 'spent many a chearfull Evening with that best of Men your great Uncle both in his Chambers & at Bow, (where Kit Simpson was generally of the Party,) & have been a Lodger for months together in your Uncle H:'s Chambers, & was so near buying 'em after his death that the Writings were drawn, & I have been with your ffather at Swinop.' The letter contains two references to the recipient's friend 'Mr. Allenby'.
