1p., 12mo. Good, on lightly-aged and creased paper. The letter begins: 'I beg a thousand time pardon, dear Mr Cartwright for my coming too late yesterday at your house. I intended coming at half past twelve; but the enormous distance which separates the different points of your metropolis, was the cause of my coming much later than that time.' At the risk of disturbing Cartwright further, he suggests that he comes 'to town before Friday next [...] Wednesday there will be a great review of troops for the Grand-duke.' He believes that this will not take place before noon, but 'At all events if you fix me an hour I sall come at it.' The reference in the letter would appear to be to the visit of the Grand Duke Alexei Alexandrovich Romanov to New York in November 1871.
